Top High Yield Low Price No Debt Below Book Stocks

It is one thing to find a high yield low price stock, but there are more characteristics that you have to look at. Does the stock only pay a dividend once a year or quarterly? Is it selling way above book value or below book? Does the company have a ton of debt?

The stock trades at 6.7 times forward earnings and pays a very generous yield of 5.1%. The company has a small amount of debt relative to its capital and sells at 62% of book value.

Friedman Industries (FRD) is involved in steel processing, pipe manufacturing and processing, and steel and pipe distribution. The stock pay a dividend rate of 5.6% and sports a forward price to earnings ratio of 5.3. This debt free company sells right at book value.

The Dallas, Texas based A. H. Belo Corporation (AHC) is a newspaper publishing company, which owns and operates four metropolitan daily newspapers: The Dallas Morning News, The Providence Journal, The Press-Enterprise, and The Denton Record-Chronicle. The company last reported negative earnings but pays a 5.8% yield. The company is debt free and trades at 77% of book value.

Five Stocks Under $10

According to research published in The Journal of Portfolio Management in 1980, low price stocks on a risk adjusted basis outperform high price stocks, by a substantial amount. The study defines a low price stock as one that sells for $10 or less.

Many investors like low priced stocks, but to reduce risk, some investors look for those that pay dividends. Dividends can return your capital faster, which helps to lower risk. One example is Telular Corp. (WRLS), a Chicago, Illinois based provider of wireless network products and services, which currently sells for less than eight dollars a share. Astro-Med Inc. (ALOT) is a producer and marketer of specialty printers and data acquisition and analysis systems. The price earnings ratio is 17 and the yield is 3.5%. The stock is currently $8 a share.

The gold mining company, Nevsun Resources Ltd. (NSU), trades at 11 times forward earnings and yields 2.8%, based on last year's dividend payments. The stock trades at less than $4 a share.

MicroFinancial (MFI) is a commercial finance company that provides equipment leasing and rental services, and other financing services. The stock, which currently sells for less than $8 per share, yields 3.5% and trades at 9 times earnings. Last November, the company increased its quarterly payout by 20%.

100 High Yield Stocks Below $10 per Share

If you ask the average investor if they prefer a low price stock over a high price stock, all things being equal, most prefer the lower price stock. As a matter of fact, even if all things weren't equal, many investors would prefer the lower priced stock. Psychologically, it feels good to buy the lower priced stocks. Investors think it is just as easy for a low price stock to rise one point as it is for a high price stock, even though in actuality it isn't true. So investors figure a one point rise in their ten dollar stock gives them a ten percent return, whereas the hundred dollar stock would return only one percent.

Alumina Ltd. (AWC) is an Australian company involved in the bauxite mining, alumina refining, and aluminum smelting businesses. The stock sports a very decent 6.9% yield, payable semi-annually. Dividends have been paid since 1990. Operating cash flow is $196 million, covering the $146 million in total dividend payouts. The current price to earnings ratio is 17.8, and the forward PE is 5.2. The stock sells for less than $4 a share.
