Are Facial Recognition Stocks Staring You in the Face?

You may have seen the term 'facial recognition' in the new recently, for several different reasons. Facial recognition is the technological process automatically identifying a person from a digital image or a video, by comparing comparing facial features to an extensive facial database. 3D facial recognition is the latest trend, which is more accurate and can be used with profiles of faces. Facial recognition systems are employed by law enforcement, national security governmental agencies, casinos, banking, mobile devices, and even social media.

A Slap in the Facial Recognition Industry

Facebook (FB), which utilizes facial recognition, was criticized by the German government which outlaws such usage, since facial recognition is now mentioned in Facebook's latest privacy policy. A year ago, Facebook removed the software for European users, but wants to reactivate it again. And just a couple months ago, Congress pressured Google (GOOG) to leave out facial recognition software in the 'Google Glass' smart glasses.

Through the Looking Glass of Facial Recognition Stocks

According to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, ther are about a dozen stocks involved in facial recognition technology, with some having it as a small part of their business and a few pure plays. Some of the other major players include 3M (MMM), which has the Cogent BioTrust biometric logon software and the CAFIS facial recognition authentication system, Apple (AAPL), which has the iPhoto software Faces and the Polar Rose facial recognition company, and Safran (SAFRY), which owns L-1 Identity Solutions.

As for companies that are more pure plays, there is Nxt-ID, Inc. (NXTD), a Shelton, Connecticut company which provides biometric solutions for the law enforcement facial recognition markets. The company has MobileBio FaceMatch, a modular facial recognition system for smartphones, tablets, laptop, and desktop computers, and 3D FaceMatch Biometric Identity Systems, which combines 3D facial recognition, 2D facial recognition, and optional fingerprint biometrics. This very low cap stock generated a loss of three cents a share for the latest quarter.

To access a free list of all the companies with some involvement in the facial recognition industry, go to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. Although there are many privacy issues, this is a growth industry of the future.

Bitcoin Going Public with IPO

It had to happen eventually. Do you remember the Winklevoss twins? They were the ones that claimed rights to Facebook (FB)? They have files a Form S-1 with the SEC for an IPO called the WINKLEVOSS BITCOIN TRUST.

According to the SEC filing:

The Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust (Trust) will issue Winklevoss Bitcoin Shares (Shares) which represent units of fractional undivided beneficial interest in and ownership of the Trust. Math-Based Asset Services LLC is the sponsor of the Trust (Sponsor) and [TRUSTEE] is the trustee and custodian of the Trust (Trustee) using proprietary and patent-pending technology to administer the Trust. The Trust intends to issue additional Shares on a continuous basis. The Shares may be purchased from the Trust only in one or more blocks of [50,000] Shares (a block of [50,000] Shares is called a Basket). The Trust will issue Shares in Baskets to certain authorized participants (Authorized Participants) on an ongoing basis as described in “Plan of Distribution.” Baskets will be offered continuously at the net asset value (NAV) for [50,000] Shares on the day that an order to create a Basket is accepted by the Trustee. The Trust will not issue fractions of a Basket.

Trust Structure

The Trust is a common law trust, formed on [ ], 2013 under New York law pursuant to the Trust Agreement between the Sponsor and the Trustee (“Trust Agreement”), which sets forth the respective rights and duties of the Sponsor and the Trustee and establishes the segregated custody account of the Trust that will be used to hold the Bitcoins deposited with the Trust (“Trust Custody Account”). The Trust holds “Bitcoins,” a digital commodity based on an open source cryptographic protocol existing on the online, end-user-to-end-user network hosting the public transaction ledger, known as the “Blockchain,” and the source code comprising the basis for the cryptographic and algorithmic protocols governing the issuance of and transactions in Bitcoins (the “Bitcoin Network”). The Trust is expected from time to time to issue Baskets in exchange for deposits of Bitcoins and to distribute Bitcoins in connection with redemptions of Baskets. The investment objective of the Trust is for the Shares to reflect the performance of a weighted average price of Bitcoins (“Blended Bitcoin Price”), less the Trust’s expenses. The Sponsor believes that, for many investors, the Shares will represent a cost-effective and convenient means to access exposure to Bitcoins. The material terms of the Trust Agreement are discussed in greater detail under the section “Description of the Trust Agreement.” The Shares represent units of fractional undivided beneficial interest in and ownership of the Trust and are expected to be traded under the ticker symbol “[TICKER]” on the [EXCHANGE].

The Trust’s Sponsor is Math-Based Asset Services LLC. The Sponsor is a Delaware limited liability company formed on May 9, 2013, and is wholly-owned by Winklevoss Capital Management LLC. Under the Delaware Limited Liability Company Act and the governing documents of the Sponsor, Winklevoss Capital Management LLC, the sole member of the Sponsor, is not responsible for the debts, obligations and liabilities of the Sponsor solely by reason of being the sole member of the Sponsor. The Sponsor will be the exclusive licensee of certain patent-pending intellectual property regarding the operation of the Trust and the Trust’s hardware and software security system (“Security System”). Winklevoss IP LLC is the owner of and is licensing to the Sponsor such intellectual property.

The Sponsor will arrange for the creation of the Trust, the registration of the Shares for their public offering in the United States and the listing of the Shares on the [EXCHANGE]. The Sponsor has agreed to assume the following administrative and marketing expenses incurred by the Trust: the Trustee’s monthly fee and expenses reimbursable under the Trust Agreement, Exchange listing fees, US Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) registration fees, printing and mailing costs, audit fees and up to $[100,000] per annum in legal expenses. The Sponsor will also pay the costs of the Trust’s organization and the initial sale of the Shares, including the applicable SEC registration fees.

The Trustee is [TRUSTEE]. In its capacity as trustee of the Trust, the Trustee is generally responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Trust. This includes (1) transferring the Trust’s Bitcoins as needed to pay the remuneration due to the Sponsor (“Sponsor’s Fee”) in Bitcoins (such Bitcoins transfers are expected to occur approximately monthly in the ordinary course), (2) calculating the NAV of the Trust and the NAV per Share, (3) receiving and processing orders from Authorized Participants to create and redeem Baskets and coordinating the processing of such orders with The Depository Trust Company (“DTC”), (4) transferring the Trust’s Bitcoins as needed to pay any extraordinary Trust expenses that are not assumed by the Sponsor and (5) selling the Trust’s remaining Bitcoins at termination of the Trust and distributing the cash proceeds to the owners of beneficial interests in the Shares (“Shareholders”) of record.

The entire SEC filing can be found here.

Facebook Allowed Some Accounts to be Accessed Without a Password

As if Facebook didn't have enough problems, according to an article by the BBC which reported information from the Hacker News website, accounts at Facebook (FB) have been accessible without a password. However, the company acted right away in closing this loophole.

Apparently, hackers could see the email addresses of Facebook users. The problem related to a feature that allowed users quickly log back in to Facebook.

First, Facebook, which trades on NASDAQ, was hit with a poorly performing IPO after-market. Then it turned out that the major investment bankers had reduced their earnings forecasts for Facebook during the IPO roadshow, including Morgan Stanley (MS), JP Morgan (JPM), and Goldman Sachs (GS). It was then hit with securities investigations and lawsuits began developing. The stock is now down around 44% from its original trading price.

Facebook trades at 110 times trailing earnings and 33 times forward earnings. Year-over-year revenues for the latest quarter were up 32.3%. The stock holds over $10.45 billion in cash, with $902 million in total debt.

Abundance: The Future is Better than You Think

Are you sick and tired all the doom and gloom books? You know, the ones that tell you how to survive the market crash, the warning about the coming depression, and so on. Well now you have a great opportunity. Read the book Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler.

This book explains how the future will get better, much better, and not just the distant future. It's the near future that is getting much better, and things are getting better right now.

So what kinds of things are the authors talking about? Technology, medical care, freedom, water availability, energy, etc. This is coming about due to exponential advances in nanotechnology, networks, robotics, artificial intelligence, and 3-D printing. (Check out Chapter 6 for ideas on investment industries for the long term.) In addition, it is the growth of do-it-yourselfers and small groups that is speeding along the changes for the better.

One of the key concepts of the book is that poverty, hunger, lack of affordable energy, illiteracy, and worldwide health issues will be greatly reduced if not eliminated; however, not due to the efforts of any government, but by individuals, especially technophilanthropists.

Chapter 14 is about education. It has some interesting ideas about how video games are great for learning, not just for kids, but for pilots and surgeons. The following chapter covers zero-cost diagnostics, which means the cost of determining medical issues that individual people have can be brought down to the cost of pennies. Did you know that unrolling Scotch tape can generate X-rays?

Chapter 16, the chapter on Freedom, was fascinating. Did you know that the violent Marxist-Leninist insurgency group in Colombia called FARC, which was responsible for terrorism and numerous kidnappings, was brought down by one Facebook page?

The glass is definitely half full, as a matter of fact, the glass is almost full according to Diamandis and Kotler. Take a look. Get a copy of Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think.

A Slap in the Facebook

Facebook (FB) was hit hard today, dropping over 10% in the after-market. The company released earnings today for the first time since the IPO. The company's revenues were $1.18 billion, up from $895 million a year earlier, an increase of 32%. It wasn't enough for the analysts, so the stock tanked. The current price is the lowest it's been since the stock went public.

This of course hasn't helped the price of companies that own lots of shares of Facebook. A free list of these 'Facebook Stocks' can be found at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com.

Top Facial Recognition Stocks

Consumer advocates and privacy activists may not like it, but it looks like facial recognition is here to stay. Just a week ago, Facebook (FB) announced that it had purchased facial-recognition technology company Face.com, a three year old business based in Israel. Investors are taking a closer look at this industry, and according to WallStreetNewsNetork.com, there are a dozen facial recognition companies to choose from.

There are several large players with facial recognition as a small portion of the business including 3M (MMM), with the Cogent BioTrust biometric logon software, and the CAFIS system which can integrate facial recognition authentication. Apple (AAPL) has the iPhoto software Faces. A couple years ago, Apple purchased the Sweden based Polar Rose facial recognition company for $22 million.  Google (GOOG) is also involved in facial recognition, including its use of PittPatt technology to allow Picasa to add name tags to pictures.

Safran SA owns L-1 Identity Solutions (SAFRY), one of leaders in the face recognition arena. The company provides facial biometric technology to casinos and the gaming industry. L-1 has such products as FaceEXPLORER, a mugshot booking solution, FaceIt® Argus, a security checkpoint face screening system, and the ABIS® System FaceExaminer that analyzes, searches and identifies faces of wanted subjects taken from poor quality surveillance video. Safran trades at 23 times earnings.

AuthenTec (AUTH), a seecurity and identity management company, produces the TCEFC1 TouchChip module used with the Mobile Offender Recognition and Identification System known as MORIS. The stock trades at 29 times forward earnings.
