Final Result of the Warren Buffett Lunch Auction

The Warren Buffett Power Lunch Auction through eBay (EBAY) was completed last week. This was the auction to have lunch with Warren Buffett, head of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) (BRK-B), along seven friends. The auction was to benefit the GLIDE Foundation in San Francisco and its programs.

In case you missed it, the results are in. The lunch sold for $1,000,100.00, with 106 bids. Bidding started out at $25,000.

Unfortunately, this lunch didn't pull in as much as last year, when the auction was hammered at $3,456,789. What is interesting is that there were the same number of bids last year as there were this year.

As a matter of fact, the high bid this year didn't even come close to many of the previous years. In 2011, the Warren Buffett lunch went for $2,345,678, in 2010, the Buffett lunch sold for $2.6 million, and even in 2008, the lunch was auctioned off at $2 million.

Not sure why it is so low this year. Any thoughts?

One Letter Domain Names and the Companies that Own Them

There are not many one-letter domain names that are owned by companies, and most of the companies are publicly traded stocks.

These companies were lucky enough to register them before December 1, 1993 (or buy them from someone who registered them by that date), as the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority put a restriction on single character domains at that time.

o.co and o.info are both owned by Overstock.com (OSTK).

q.com is owned by CenturyLink (CTL). If you go to q.com, it takes you right to CenturyLink's web site.

x.com is owned by x.commerce, which is owned by eBay (EBAY). When you go to the x.com website, it takes you to the x.commerce website.

z.com is owned by Nissan North America Inc., which is owned by Nissan Motor (NSANY), which trades on NASDAQ. However, the website is currently inactive.

i.net is owned by Future Media Architects, a privately held company. The company also owns c.tv, h.tv, k.tv and n.tv along with several other dot tv domain names.

u.tv is owned by UTV Media (UTV.L), a broadcasting and New Media company based in Belfast in Northern Ireland. The company trades on the London Stock Exchange.

$20 Million for Two Boxes of Hostess Twinkies

Someone listed $20 million for two boxes of Hostess Twinkies on eBay (EBAY)! (Thanks to Rachel Fox for finding this Twinkies news.) I guess union strikes and company shutdowns can generate a lot of news and end up creating new collectibles.

This listing closed on Black Friday, November 23, 2012, and had 51 offers. The sales price was technically $19,999,999.90. These were 13.5 ounce Golden Sponge Cake Cream Filling Cakes with ten Twinkies per box. One half the proceeds to be donated to the local children's hospital according to the listing.

Full Disclosure: Author of the article has never eaten a Twinkie and has no plans to do so in the near future.

Have Lunch with Warren Buffett for Only 50 Grand

Yes, that's right. The current eBay (EBAY) bid on the Warren Buffett Power Lunch for you and seven friends is only $50,200 (at the time this article is being written), with the next bid level at $50,300. That means for only $50,300, you could be the high bidder if no one else bids, the meeting with Buffett could be yours.

This is your chance to sit down to lunch with Warren Buffett, head of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) (BRK-B), and get his investing advice.  In the past, these auctions have had bidding in excess of a million dollars.

The auction will run from June 3 through June 8, closing at 7:30pm. Proceeds go towards the GLIDE Foundation in San Francisco. The starting bid will be $25,000 and you must pre-qualify for the auction.
